When Sam Reynolds rolled into Red Bull Rampage 2015, he did so aboard a mountain bike built specifically for one of the most demanding events in mountain biking.

As featured by Pinkbike, Reynolds’ custom Polygon Collosus DH9 downhill MTB marked a major moment for both rider and brand, combining World Cup downhill DNA with freeride-ready durability for the ultimate test of progression, speed, and control.

Best known at the time for his slopestyle background, Reynolds had been steadily proving himself on a big bike through the Fest Series.

Rampage would be his first appearance at the iconic event, and Polygon’s UR Team responded by preparing a one-off DH9 designed to handle massive impacts, steep desert lines, and the unmistakable pressure of freeride’s biggest stage.

A Rampage-Specific Downhill Mountain Bike

At the core of Sam Reynolds’ build is the Polygon Collosus DH9 downhill mountain bike frame, developed using direct feedback from Polygon’s World Cup downhill program.

While the platform was born from racing, Pinkbike notes that the bike is “clearly capable of sending it big”, a crucial requirement for Rampage-level freeriding.

The frame combines an aluminum front triangle with a carbon swingarm, balancing strength, stiffness, and weight savings. To handle Rampage’s heavy landings, the BOS VOID shock was custom-tuned with added progression, ensuring the bike remained composed during high-speed compressions and large drops.

Despite its burly setup, including heavy-duty tires and tubes, the custom DH9 downhill mountain bike tipped the scales at just 15.9 kg (33 lbs), making it one of the lighter downhill mountain bikes seen at Rampage that year.

World Cup Tech Meets Freeride Abuse

Pinkbike highlighted the DH9’s premium component selection, blending downhill race technology with freeride reliability. Up front, a BOS FCV fork with 37mm stanchions delivered precise steering and confidence under extreme loads.

The bike rolled on e*thirteen LG1 carbon wheels, chosen for their strength and impact resistance, robust enough for Reynolds to trust them in Rampage terrain. A clever tube-plus-tubeless setup ensured added security in the event of punctures, combining race efficiency with freeride practicality.

Around the bottom bracket, Reynolds ran e*thirteen LG1r carbon cranks, paired with an LG1 guide and a KMC X10SL chain, while Kenda Honey Badger DH CAP tires provided grip and durability in Rampage’s sandy, abrasive dirt.

A Statement Moment for Polygon and Gravity MTB

Pinkbike’s feature on Sam Reynolds’ custom Polygon Collosus DH9 underscored Polygon’s growing presence in gravity riding.

Built on proven downhill MTB engineering and adapted for freeride’s most extreme environment, the DH9 showcased the brand’s ability to deliver a mountain bike that performs at the highest level, whether on World Cup tracks or Rampage cliffs.

For Polygon, Rampage 2015 wasn’t just about participation, it was a clear statement of intent in the global downhill MTB and freeride scene.

For riders inspired by Sam Reynolds’ Rampage run and curious to see how that same performance DNA carries into today’s bikes, now is the perfect time to discover the latest Polygon mountain bike lineup, where race-proven technology meets modern trail and gravity riding demands.
